Makeup can be many things—a creative expression, a boost of confidence, or a helping hand when you’re not feeling your best. We love makeup for its ability to accentuate and compliment natural beauty, not define it.
We love that we can look more polished or playful, depending on our mood, simply by utilizing different earthy tones.
Cate Cosmetics is a collection of neutral shades to help you accomplish the look you’re seeking, without taking any of the attention away from your natural beauty.
A few pops of color are necessary, but for the most part, neutrals can create any powerful or striking look, without needing electric, ultra-synthetic colors.
Here are a few reasons why you can never go wrong with a neutral palette:
You’ll Feel (and look) Like Yourself
We love tips and tricks designed to emphasize or downplay certain elements of our look. But makeup aimed at distorting or changing the face frequently makes us feel like we’re covering, not emphasizing.
We think you should always be comfortable in your own skin. Brows should look like brows, and blush and illuminizer should create a believable glow.
That’s why we opt for more subtle tones that complement our natural coloring. They simply work to enhance our natural beauty, and to us, that’s what it’s all about.
Less Is More
It’s a phrase we’ve all heard before, but hearing it from celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo has us convinced. His book of clients includes the likes of Kendall Jenner and Karlie Kloss, and his work has appeared on over 500 magazine covers.
Hung believes in allowing natural features to speak for themselves.
“There’s nothing more beautiful than simple, nice skin, a little liner, or a nice pop of color. Don’t look at how people do makeup on Instagram and think you have to do it like that,” explained the artist.
For those who see their makeup as a source of creative expression, a more neutral palette is far from boring. Earth tones can include a deep burgundy lip, or a dramatic, smokey eye—just usually not both at the same time.
Think of it as scaling back on overall application, to allow your unique features to shine. Take a page out of Hung Vanngo’s book, and embrace freckles, or play up the thick contour of an untrimmed brow.
Choose the right neutral for you
For many of those who are fair-skinned, the most flattering neutrals are pinks and peaches. Medium skin tones are accentuated by olive and bronze shades, and more orange-based lip colors. Darker skin tones benefit from more metallic neutrals, like copper; try looking at the color of the inner bottom lip for lipstick color inspiration.
Don’t forget about pops of color! If you’re feeling like a dark, vampy lip, or a vibrant, rich red—go for it! These are iconic looks that work well for almost every skin tone, as long as you’re comfortable making a louder statement.
When in Doubt, Take Your Cue from the French
There is nothing more elegant than the perpetually chic nonchalance of French style—this includes the beauty routine.
Artistic director of the French fashion house, Mugler, says, "The hair and makeup not only accents the pieces in the collection, but it also captures the Mugler woman's attitude, her identity, and how she presents herself to the world."
French style emphasizes women’s most attractive attributes: ever-cool confidence, and individuality. French women are known to embrace a face without foundation, play up on the natural brow, and occasionally rock a fiery red lip.
That doesn’t mean shying away from makeup, but rather, choosing products with great care. Skin care and nourishing ingredients are of supreme importance, along with natural hues that play up on your favorite facial features.
