How-to: Apply Matte Lipstick

How-to: Apply Matte Lipstick

Matte lips may be the most viral beauty trend of the year. We’re always looking for a more polished spin on a modern look, and with the holidays around the corner, we’re already trying out our matte lip finishes. A word of caution: matte lips tend to emphasize imperfections, and should be approached with a little more care than our usual apply-on-the-run. Here’s our fast and easy process for properly prepping for a matte lip:

  1. EXFOLIATE YOUR LIPS

Dry, dead skin on your lips is often times accentuated by matte lipstick. To insure that dry lips aren’t a problem, exfoliate your lips at the beginning of your beauty routine. We like to make our own exfoliator by mixing a little bit of coconut oil with brown sugar, and gently scrubbing our lips with a soft bristle toothbrush.

  1. ADD MOISTURE

A common complaint about the matte look is that it’s too drying. To combat dehydrated lips, apply a high quality lip balm right after exfoliating. This will act as a base coat by replacing moisture, and filling any lip cracks to ensure the color goes on smoothly.

  1. FINISH THE REST OF YOUR MAKEUP

Applying your matte color immediately after the lip balm will make the finish too creamy. Instead, apply the rest of your makeup while the balm is absorbed. We like to opt for subtle eyes when our lips are making a statement.

  1. LINE YOUR LIPS

Use a lip liner to create a border and outline the exact shape you’re looking to achieve. Lining carefully will also make sure you only have to apply your lip color once!

  1. APPLY YOUR MATTE LIPSTICK

Feel free to apply straight from the lipstick tube, but a brush works as well. Most liquid lipsticks dry matte, and we like to use the applicator to be as precise as possible. With a liquid lipstick, wait 10 minutes before eating or drinking to allow some time for your lips to dry.
